Texture size

Under the 2.5 MB example budget, so the viewer is ready soon after the poster image. About 1.2 s to download on a 10 Mbit/s connection. The iPhone file is larger: USDZ packs plain textures without Draco or KTX2.

Drag the chair or focus the phone screen and use the arrow keys to move it, Q and E to turn it, Enter to place or pick it up. File sizes are an example model based on typical compression ratios; real files are measured.

How the viewer gets into your store

Three platforms, three short paths. Each ends with a test on a real iPhone and a real Android phone, not only a desktop browser.

Shopify

  1. 1

Upload the GLB as product media, next to the photos. Shopify accepts 3D models in the product gallery.

  2. 2

Online Store 2.0 themes such as Dawn show the model in the gallery with a "View in your space" button.

  3. 3

I test AR Quick Look on iPhone and Scene Viewer on Android against the live product page.

Keep a photo as the first media item, so the largest image above the fold is a photo and the model loads when it is opened.

WooCommerce

  1. 1

Allow GLB and USDZ uploads, which WordPress does not accept by default, and attach both files to the product.

  2. 2

Add the open-source model-viewer web component to the product template, loaded only on products that have a model.

  3. 3

Point ios-src at the USDZ and set ar-modes so each phone opens its own AR viewer.

No plugin bundle: one small script on product pages with a model, nothing anywhere else. More in WooCommerce tuning.

Custom site

  1. 1

<model-viewer src="chair.glb" ios-src="chair.usdz" ar poster="chair.webp"> with alt text describing the product.

  2. 2

Serve from a CDN with model/gltf-binary and model/vnd.usdz+zip content types and long cache headers.

  3. 3

loading="lazy" plus a sized poster image, so the model downloads only near the screen and nothing shifts.

The poster reserves the space, so layout shift stays at zero. See speed and Core Web Vitals.

If the viewer slows your product page, it is fixed in the price. Core Web Vitals are measured before and after. If the page gets measurably slower because of the viewer, I rework the files or the loading until it does not.

No model yet? Product modelling builds one from photos or CAD, and the same model serves product renders.

When I would not recommend this

3D on a product page earns its place on some products and not on others.

  • 01Shoppers judge the product by touch: knitwear, bedding, cosmetics. A 3D model adds little that good photos do not.
  • 02The store is already slow. Fix speed first; a viewer on a slow page is a slower page.
  • 03Thousands of products need 3D next month. That needs a scanning or automated pipeline, not hand-built models.
  • 04Products change every season and nobody will update the models. An outdated model costs more trust than no model.

From product photo to AR button

Every step has a file you can open on your own phone.

  1. 1

    Model

Built or optimised in Blender to a triangle budget, at true scale in metres.

  2. 2

    Materials

PBR textures baked in Blender, compressed and matched to your product photos.

  3. 3

    Phone test

GLB and USDZ links sent to you to try in your own room before embedding.

  4. 4

    Embed and measure

Viewer added to the store, Core Web Vitals checked before and after.

Exported from Blender. The GLB comes from Blender's glTF 2.0 exporter with Draco mesh compression. The USDZ comes from Blender's own USD exporter or, when that file needs it, from Apple's Reality Converter on a Mac; I check the current versions of both tools at the time of the job and keep whichever file looks right on a real iPhone. Lighting and detail are baked into textures in Blender first. Why Blender, and what you get

Questions about 3D viewers and AR

Which devices support AR?

Most recent iPhones and iPads open USDZ files in AR Quick Look from Safari, and many Android phones with Google Play Services for AR open GLB files in Scene Viewer from Chrome. On desktop, shoppers get the 3D viewer without AR, and the page can show a QR code that opens it on their phone.

Will a 3D viewer slow my store?

Not if it is built to wait. A poster image shows first, the viewer script and model load only on product pages that have one, and the GLB stays inside a size budget using Draco mesh and KTX2 texture compression. I measure Core Web Vitals before and after, so you can see the difference yourself.

Can you add it to Shopify?

Yes. Shopify accepts GLB files as product media, and Online Store 2.0 themes such as Dawn show them in the product gallery with a button to view the product in your space. I prepare and test the files, check the iPhone version, and adjust the theme if your gallery needs it.
